- Struve Geodetic Arc -
* 지구의 정확한 모양과 크기를 측량하기 위하여 설치한 일련의 거점들로 노르웨이 함메르페스트에서 흑해까지 10개 나라에 2,820km 길이로 이어져 있는 아크(arc)이다. 1816∼1855년에 독일계 러시아 과학자 프리드리히 게오르그 빌헬름 폰 스트루베가 만들고 연구하였다.
* 원래는 265개의 천문대와 거점을 연결하여 258개의 주(州) 삼각형을 형성하였다.

* The Struve Arc is a chain of survey triangulations stretching from Hammerfest in Norway to the Black Sea, through 10 countries and over 2,820 km. These are points of a survey, carried out between 1816 and 1855 by the astronomer Friedrich Georg Wilhelm Struve, which represented the first accurate measuring of a long segment of a meridian. This helped to establish the exact size and shape of the planet and marked an important step in the development of earth sciences and topographic mapping. It is an extraordinary example of scientific collaboration among scientists from different countries, and of collaboration between monarchs for a scientific cause. The original arc consisted of 258 main triangles with 265 main station points. The listed site includes 34 of the original station points, with different markings, i.e. a drilled hole in rock, iron cross, cairns, or built obelisks.

* 브라질·아르헨티나·파라과이 접경 부근 우루과이강과 파라나강 사이의 지역에 17세기 초 예수회 선교사들이 포교를 위하여 세운 인디언교화부락(레두시온)이다.
* 1767년 선교사들이 추방되자 부락들은 방치되어 폐허가 되었다.
* 브라질에 사오 미구엘 1개, 아르헨티나에 산 이그사니오 미니 등 4개, 도합 5개의 17-18세기의 예수회 교회가 남아있음.  

* The ruins of São Miguel das Missões in Brazil, and those of San Ignacio Miní, Santa Ana, Nuestra Señora de Loreto and Santa María la Mayor in Argentina, lie at the heart of a tropical forest. They are the impressive remains of five Jesuit missions, built in the land of the Guaranis during the 17th and 18th centuries. Each is characterized by a specific layout and a different state of conservation.

- Historical Centre of the City of Yaroslavl -
* 11세기 중요 상업지구로 성장했으며 모스크바로부터 250km떨어져 위치해 있다. 캐서린 왕비에 의해 계획적으로 만들어진 외곽 도시의 건축물이 유명하다.

* Situated at the confluence of the Volga and Kotorosl Rivers some 250 km north-east of Moscow, the historic city of Yaroslavl developed into a major commercial centre from the 11th century. It is renowned for its numerous 17th-century churches and is an outstanding example of the urban planning reform Empress Catherine the Great ordered for the whole of Russia in 1763. While keeping some of its significant historic structures, the town was renovated in the neoclassical style on a radial urban master plan. It has also kept elements from the 16th century in the Spassky Monastery, one of the oldest in the Upper Volga region, built on the site of a pagan temple in the late 12th century but reconstructed over time.

* 아르헨티나의 산 환(San Juan)과 라 리오하(La Rioja) 지역에 있는 자연공원들로  트라이아스기의 화석이 많이 남아있어 지질학적·고생물학적·고고학적·생물학적·생태학적 가치가 있는 곳이다.
* 특히 트라이아스기의 식물과 동물 화석이 풍부하여, 고생대의 자연환경과 동물의 진화를 연구하는데 중요한 곳이다.(1950년대 말 공룡의 화석이 발견)
* 총 면적은 275,300ha이며, 평균 해발고도 약 1,200m, 가장 높은 곳은 3,000m에 이른다. 건조기후로 대부분 사막지역이다.

* These two contiguous parks, extending over 275,300 ha in the desert region on the western border of the Sierra Pampeanas of central Argentina, contain the most complete continental fossil record known from the Triassic Period (245-208 million years ago). Six geological formations in the parks contain fossils of a wide range of ancestors of mammals, dinosaurs and plants revealing the evolution of vertebrates and the nature of palaeo-environments in the Triassic Period.

 노보데비치수도원(Ensemble of the Novodevichy Convent )
* 남서 모스크바지역에 있는 노보데비치 수도원은 16세기와 17세기에 건축되어진 모스크바의 바로크양식을 나타내는 건물임.
* 모스크바의 크레믈린과 밀접한 관계를 갖는 러시아의 정치, 문화, 종교 역사과 직접적 관계가 있는 수도원으로 전쟁중에는 요새의 역할을 겸했고 차르 일족이나 명문귀족의 자녀가 은둔하거나 유폐당하기도 했다.
*  러시아혁명 후인 1922년 이 수도원은 박물관으로 지정되고, 1934년 이래 국립역사박물관의 분관으로서 일반에게 공개되고 있다.

* The Novodevichy Convent, in south-western Moscow, built in the 16th and 17th centuries in the so-called Moscow Baroque style, was part of a chain of monastic ensembles that were integrated into the defence system of the city. The convent was directly associated with the political, cultural and religious history of Russia, and closely linked to the Moscow Kremlin. It was used by women of the Tsar’s family and the aristocracy. Members of the Tsar’s family and entourage were also buried in its cemetery. The convent provides an example of the highest accomplishments of Russian architecture with rich interiors and an important collection of paintings and artefacts.

* 아르헨티나 산타크루즈에 있는 "쿠에바 다 라스 마노스(손바닥 그림의 동굴)"은 핀투라강의 계곡에 있다.
*  선사시대의 뛰어난 바위예술품으로서 남아메리카 초기 인류문화를 이해하는데 매우 중요한 역할을 함 
 The Cueva de las Manos, Río Pinturas, contains an exceptional assemblage of cave art, executed between 13,000 and 9,500 years ago. It takes its name (Cave of the Hands) from the stencilled outlines of human hands in the cave, but there are also many depictions of animals, such as guanacos (Lama guanicoe), still commonly found in the region, as well as hunting scenes. The people responsible for the paintings may have been the ancestors of the historic hunter-gatherer communities of Patagonia found by European settlers in the 19th century.

브랑겔 섬의 자연보호지구 (Natural System of Wrangel Island Reserve)
* 이 지역은 브랑겔섬(면적 7,608.7 km2)과 헤랄드섬(면적 11.3 km2) 그리고 각 섬에서 각각 12마일씩 포함된 해양지역 (면적 11,543 km2)을 합하여 전체면적이 19,163 km2이다.
* 이 지역은 북극권 북쪽인 70°N에 위치하고 북쪽과 서쪽으로는 동시베리아해, 남쪽과 동쪽으로는 추크치해로 둘러싸여 있다.
* 이 지역은 툰드라지역에 속하지만 식물의 종다양성과 고유도가 뛰어나며, 이 섬은 수백종의 철새와 해양포유동물의 최북단 서식지로 사용된다.

*  Located well above the Arctic Circle, the site includes the mountainous Wrangel Island (7,608 km2), Herald Island (11 km2) and surrounding waters. Wrangel was not glaciated during the Quaternary Ice Age, resulting in exceptionally high levels of biodiversity for this region. The island boasts the world’s largest population of Pacific walrus and the highest density of ancestral polar bear dens. It is a major feeding ground for the grey whale migrating from Mexico and the northernmost nesting ground for 100 migratory bird species, many endangered. Currently, 417 species and subspecies of vascular plants have been identified on the island, double that of any other Arctic tundra territory of comparable size and more than any other Arctic island. 험블톤과 산타로라의 초석 공장 (Humberstone and Santa Laura Saltpeter Works)
* 칠레의 험블스톤과 산타로라의 초석산업단지들은 1870년대에 팜파사막에 세워졌다.
* 칠레, 페루, 볼리비아 등지에서 온 작업가들에 의해 만들어진 초석작업장은  200개를 포함한다. 이 지역의 불안정한 지질 구조로 인해 유네스코는 위험유산으로 등록했다.

[칠레 초석] 칠레 북부 아타카마사막 및 타라파카사막의 건조지역 캘리치층(chaliche층)에 띠모양으로 넓게 분포한다. 중생대의 용암이나 응회암에서 연유한 것으로 짐작되며, 그 밖에 미국 캘리포니아주·유타, 옛 소련, 아프리카 북부를 비롯하여 페루·볼리비아 등에 걸친 사막지방에서 큰 광상인 석회집적층을 이루어 산출된다. 비료·요업·화학공업에 이용된다.

* Humberstone and Santa Laura works contain over 200 former saltpeter works where workers from Chile, Peru and Bolivia lived in company towns and forged a distinctive communal pampinos culture. That culture is manifest in their rich language, creativity, and solidarity, and, above all, in their pioneering struggle for social justice, which had a profound impact on social history. Situated in the remote Pampas, one of the driest deserts on Earth, thousands of pampinos lived and worked in this hostile environment for over 60 years, from 1880, to process the largest deposit of saltpeter in the world, producing the fertilizer sodium nitrate that was to transform agricultural lands in North and South America, and in Europe, and produce great wealth for Chile. Because of the vulnerability of the structures and the impact of a recent earthquake, the site was also placed on the List of World Heritage in Danger to help mobilize resources for its conservation.

* 유적이 남아있는 지역은 과거 사산 페르시아 제국의 북쪽 경계로 3세기 초부터 7세기 중반까지  카스피 해의 동서 지역을 넓게 지배했다.
* 방어용 요새 건물들은 거대한 돌로 튼튼하게 지어졌으며 카스피 해안서부터 산악 지역까지 두 개의 평행한 성벽이 길게 이어진다.
* 이 고대도시의 요새지 역할은 19세기 러시아의 지배 아래 들어갈 때까지 계속되었다.  

 * The Citadel, Ancient City and Fortress Buildings of Derbent were part of the northern lines of the Sasanian Persian Empire, which extended east and west of the Caspian Sea. The fortification was built in stone. It consisted of two parallel walls that formed a barrier from the seashore up to the mountain. The town of Derbent was built between these two walls, and has retained part of its medieval fabric. The site continued to be of great strategic importance until the 19th century.

라파 누이 국립공원 (Rapa Nui National Park)  
* 칠레 해안으로부터 3,800㎞ 떨어진 태평양의 고도(孤島) 이스터섬에 있는 석상과 분묘 등의 유적군(群)으로 라파누이란 원주민들이 부르는 이스터섬의 이름이다.
* A.D 300년경 이 섬에 정착한 폴리네시아 원주민 집단이 외부영향과 단절된 강력하고, 독창적이며 원주민전통이 강한 기념비적 조각과 건축을 건립하였다. 모아이의 석상으로 알려져 있는 이들 석상의 높이는 4∼5m, 무게는 4∼5t이다.
* 10세기부터 16세기까지 이 집단은 뛰어난 문화경관을 창조한 신전과 수많은 돌 인물상들을 건설하였으며 오늘날 전세계를 매료시키고 있음.

* 볼리비아의 산타크루스 주 북동쪽, 브라질과 국경을 맞댄 지역에 위치하며 아마존 분지에서 가장 규모(1,523,000 ha)가 큰 편에 속하는 국립공원이자, 보존상태가 좋은 국립공원으로 꼽힌다.
* 해발고도는 200m에서 1000m 사이에 걸쳐 있고 약 10억년 전 선캄브리아기에 형성된 지형으로 그 시기부터 생물의 진화과정을 관찰하기에도 제격이다.  특히 고도가 다양하여 열대 사바나 지대, 고지의 상록수림, 야자나무 숲, 늪지대, 대상림(帶狀林)까지 다양한 식생을 볼 수 있는 곳이다. 전체적으로 4000종 이상의 식물이 자라고 있으며 멸종위기의 대형 척추동물을 포함한 다양한 동식물이 서식하고 있다.

* 볼리비아 치키토스에 예수회선교사들이 건설한(1696∼1760년) 산 프란체스코 하비에르· 콘셉시온· 산타아나· 산미겔· 산 라파엘· 산 호세데치키토스 등의 선교단 건물.
* 성당은 목재와 햇볕에 말린 벽돌인 어도비로 지었는데, 지붕을 낮게 하고 신랑(身廊)을 넓게 만들었다. 대부분 화려하게 장식한 파사드를 설치하였으며 건물을 지탱하는 나무기둥에는 여러 가지 문양을 새겨넣었다.

* Between 1696 and 1760, six ensembles of reducciones (settlements of Christianized Indians) inspired by the ‘ideal cities’ of the 16th-century philosophers were founded by the Jesuits in a style that married Catholic architecture with local traditions. 포토시 광산도시 (Potosi Mining Town) - City of Potosí
* 16세기 세계에서 가장 큰 산업도시
* 카리카리 인공호수 주변에 각종 공업적 기념물 존재 

* In the 16th century, this area was regarded as the world’s largest industrial complex. The extraction of silver ore relied on a series of hydraulic mills. The site consists of the industrial monuments of the Cerro Rico, where water is provided by an intricate system of aqueducts and artificial lakes; the colonial town with the Casa de la Moneda; the Church of San Lorenzo; several patrician houses; and the barrios mitayos, the areas where the workers lived.

쿠엔카(Historic Center of Santa Ana de los Rios de Cuenca)  
* 꾸엔까는 에콰도르의 안데스 산맥에 있는 도시로 400년 이상 된 도시의 역사가 잘 보존되고 있다.
* 스페인 내륙식민도시의 전형적인 예로서 르네상스 시대의 도시계획 원칙들이 아메리카에 성공적으로 접목된 사례를 보여줌.  

* Santa Ana de los Ríos de Cuenca is set in a valley surrounded by the Andean mountains in the south of Ecuador. This inland colonial town (entroterra), now the country's third city, was founded in 1557 on the rigorous planning guidelines issued 30 years earlier by the Spanish king Charles V. Cuenca still observes the formal orthogonal town plan that it has respected for 400 years. One of the region's agricultural and administrative centres, it has been a melting pot for local and immigrant populations. Cuenca's architecture, much of which dates from the 18th century, was 'modernized' in the economic prosperity of the 19th century as the city became a major exporter of quinine, straw hats and other products.
