*  The Koutammakou landscape in north-eastern Togo, which extends into neighbouring Benin, is home to the Batammariba whose remarkable mud tower-houses (Takienta) have come to be seen as a symbol of Togo. In this landscape, nature is strongly associated with the rituals and beliefs of society. The 50,000-ha cultural landscape is remarkable due to the architecture of its tower-houses which are a reflection of social structure; its farmland and forest; and the associations between people and landscape. Many of the buildings are two storeys high and those with granaries feature an almost spherical form above a cylindrical base. Some of the buildings have flat roofs, others have conical thatched roofs. They are grouped in villages, which also include ceremonial spaces, springs, rocks and sites reserved for initiation ceremonies.

베냉(BENIN)의 역사유적: 아보메이 왕궁
* 1625-1900년간 12명의 왕이 거주하였던 아보메이 왕국의 궁전
* 왕궁은 높이 6m의 점토로 된 외벽에 둘러싸여 있으며 면적 40ha이다.  정사각 또는 직사각 모양으로서 바깥 정원을 지나 안뜰로 들어가도록 되어 있다. 건축자재로는 점토와 티크를 주로 사용하였다. 문에는 조각을 새겼고 외벽은 왕의 공을 기리는 내용의 채색 부조로 장식하였다. 당시에는 초가지붕이었으나 복원이 어려워 오늘날에는 함석지붕으로 대체하였다.
*  사라진 왕국을 기억시켜주는 독특한 유물임  

* From 1625 to 1900, 12 kings succeeded one another at the head of the powerful Kingdom of Abomey. With the exception of King Akaba, who had his own separate enclosure, they all had their palaces built within the same cob-wall area, in keeping with previous palaces as regards the use of space and materials. The royal palaces of Abomey are a unique reminder of this vanished kingdom.

오순-오소그보 숲 (Osun-Osogbo Sacred Grove)
* 나이지리아남부의 오소그보(Osogbo)시 외곽 지역에 위치해 있는 ‘성스러운 숲’이다. '오순-오소그보(Osun-Osogbo)', ‘오순-오소그보의 성스러운 숲(Oshun-Oshogbo Sacred Grove)’등으로 불린다.
* 이 숲에는  풍요를 가져다주는 여신,‘오순(Osun)’이 살고 있다고 남부의 요루바(Yoruba) 사람들은  믿어왔으며, 이 여신은 고대부터 오소그보 지역을 배고픔과 질병으로 부터 지켜준 정신적 보호자였다.
* 매년 여름 8월 마지막 주에 이 숲에서 열리는 축제에서 나이지리아 사람들은 다양한 종교적 행위를 통해 여신에 대한 감사와 존경의 마음을 전한다.

* The dense forest of the Osun Sacred Grove, on the outskirts of the city of Osogbo, is one of the last remnants of primary high forest in southern Nigeria. Regarded as the abode of the goddess of fertility Osun, one of the pantheon of Yoruba gods, the landscape of the grove and its meandering river is dotted with sanctuaries and shrines, sculptures and art works in honour of Osun and other deities. The sacred grove, which is now seen as a symbol of identity for all Yoruba people, is probably the last in Yoruba culture. It testifies to the once widespread practice of establishing sacred groves outside all settlements.

* 울퉁불퉁한 협곡과  아주 평탄한 모래지형, 바위투성이의 가파른 산악 지형, 그리고 초원이 넓게 분포된 지형에서  2천 년 전부터 오늘날까지 이 지역에서 목축(牧畜)으로 생계를 유지해오고 있는 나마(Nama)인들은 이동목축의 생활 방식에 맞춰 ‘하루 옴(haru om)’이라 불리는 이동식 집을 짓고 살고 있다. 이러한 이동목축과 주거모습은 인간이 자연에 어떻게 적응해 나갔는지를 보여주는 좋은 예이다.

* The 160,000 ha Richtersveld Cultural and Botanical Landscape of dramatic mountainous desert in north-western South Africa constitutes a cultural landscape communally owned and managed. This site sustains the semi-nomadic pastoral livelihood of the Nama people, reflecting seasonal patterns that may have persisted for as much as two millennia in southern Africa. It is the only area where the Nama still construct portable rush-mat houses (haru om) and includes seasonal migrations and grazing grounds, together with stock posts. The pastoralists collect medicinal and other plants and have a strong oral tradition associated with different places and attributes of the landscape.

* Vredefort Dome, approximately 120 km south-west of Johannesburg, is a representative part of a larger meteorite impact structure, or astrobleme. Dating back 2,023 million years, it is the oldest astrobleme yet found on Earth. With a radius of 190 km, it is also the largest and the most deeply eroded. Vredefort Dome bears witness to the world’s greatest known single energy release event, which had devastating global effects including, according to some scientists, major evolutionary changes. It provides critical evidence of the Earth’s geological history and is crucial to understanding of the evolution of the planet. Despite the importance of impact sites to the planet’s history, geological activity on the Earth’s surface has led to the disappearance of evidence from most of them, and Vredefort is the only example to provide a full geological profile of an astrobleme below the crater floor.

* A serial site – in Cape Province, South Africa – made up of eight protected areas, covering 553,000 ha, the Cape Floral Region is one of the richest areas for plants in the world. It represents less than 0.5% of the area of Africa but is home to nearly 20% of the continent’s flora. The site displays outstanding ecological and biological processes associated with the Fynbos vegetation, which is unique to the Cape Floral Region. The outstanding diversity, density and endemism of the flora are among the highest worldwide. Unique plant reproductive strategies, adaptive to fire, patterns of seed dispersal by insects, as well as patterns of endemism and adaptive radiation found in the flora, are of outstanding value to science.
